DESCRIPTION

Carved hardwood helmet mask with polychrome decoration: bipartite blue/indigo and reddish-brown cranial field over all-over incised parallel hatching; white kaolin facial plane with horizontal slit eyes and strongly projecting pointed chin; single brass tack at temple junction; rim perforations for costume attachment.

While not an ethnographic artifact intended for traditional ritual ceremony, its design strongly evokes the classic formal languages of Gabonese artistry. The upper facial plane features the iconic, sweeping brow structure reminiscent of Vuvi and Tsogho sacred works, while the lower face converges into an uncharacteristic, dramatic pointed chin. The dual-toned polychrome finish gives it a sharp, modern, decorative power that bridges traditional African forms with mid-century avant-garde sensibilities.

CONDITION REPORT

  • OVERALL: Structurally sound and stable. No active deterioration. No restoration, no fill, no repaint. The object is presented as found. Wood: Dense and hard, no evidence of active insect damage. Minor age-related shrinkage cracks present along the grain, all stable and longitudinal. The most visible crack runs along the left side of the cranium (visible in image 1); it is stable and does not compromise structural integrity.
  • POLYCHROMY: The blue/indigo pigment field on the left cranial half is partially preserved but shows weathering and surface loss, particularly at the upper crown. The reddish-brown field on the right cranial half is better preserved and richer in tone. The white kaolin on the facial plane has worn through at the high points (forehead, nose bridge, cheekbones) to a pale ochre-ivory tone. The incised hatching on the cranium is fully intact and deeply cut throughout.
  • SUMMARY OF LOSSES: No structural losses. No missing elements. The polychromy is partially worn. The object is complete as carved and as originally assembled.

WHY TO BUY THIS OBJECT

  • POWERFUL GRAPHIC PRESENCE: The split blue-and-brown face offers a highly modern, cubistic look that immediately draws the eye in a gallery window or contemporary room setting.
  • AFFORDABLE GALLERY AESTHETICS: It provides the commanding presence, scale (23 cm), and color play of African art at an attractive, decorative price point.
  • INTERIORS FOCAL POINT: Its clean lines and deep contrasts balance beautifully with modern design, industrial aesthetics, or mid-century furniture.
